Prevention & Parent Education

Healthy habits start at home.

Brushing basics:

  • Under age 3: Rice-grain size fluoride toothpaste
  • Age 3+: Pea-size fluoride toothpaste
  • Frequency: 2x/day (morning and bedtime)
  • Technique: Gentle circles, all surfaces
  • Supervision: Until age 7–8 (they miss spots)

Flossing:

  • Start when teeth touch
  • Floss picks easier for kids
  • Once daily (bedtime best)

Diet tips:

  • Limit sugary foods and drinks
  • No bottles in bed (except water)
  • Water between meals
  • Cheese, nuts, veggies = tooth-friendly snacks

Professional prevention:

  • Fluoride treatments - Every 6 months
  • Sealants - When permanent molars erupt (age 6–7)
  • Regular visits - Catch problems early

Lead by example: Let them watch you brush and floss. Kids copy what they see!

Make it fun: Songs, character toothbrushes, sticker charts. Whatever works!

Frequently Asked Questions

When should my child first visit the dentist?

American Dental Association recommends first visit by age 1 or within 6 months of first tooth appearing. Early happy visits build comfort, let us check development, and prevent cavities. First visits are short (15–30 minutes), fun—just quick exam while child sits on your lap. We count teeth, check for cavities, demonstrate brushing. Parents stay with children. We give stickers and prizes. Goal: create lifetime of comfortable dental visits! Call (706) 226-2228 to schedule!

What services do you offer for children?

Full pediatric care: First exams (age 1+), cleanings (every 6 months), fluoride treatments (strengthen enamel), dental sealants (protect back teeth), fillings (tooth-colored), emergency care (toothaches, injuries), orthodontic evaluations (age 7+), mouthguards (sports), habit counseling (thumb sucking), and parent education. We make visits fun, educational, and positive. Kids actually look forward to seeing us! Call (706) 226-2228!

How do you handle anxious or fearful children?

We’re experts with nervous kids! Techniques: Tell-Show-Do (explain, demonstrate, then do), positive reinforcement (praise, stickers, prizes), parent presence (you stay with child), gentle approach (no sudden movements), distraction (TVs, toys), oral sedation for very anxious children, short appointments, and building trust over time. We NEVER force or shame. We go at child’s pace. Many anxious kids become enthusiastic patients! Call (706) 226-2228 to discuss!

Do you accept children's dental insurance?

YES! We accept most PPO plans including Delta Dental, Cigna, Aetna, MetLife, Guardian, United Healthcare, and many more. Medicaid and CHIP accepted. We verify benefits BEFORE treatment, file claims for you, and explain costs clearly. Most plans cover 100% of preventive care (exams, cleanings, X-rays, fluoride) for children. Payment plans available. Call (706) 226-2228—we’ll check your specific coverage!

How can I prevent cavities in my child?

Prevention tips: Brush 2x/day with fluoride toothpaste (rice-grain size under age 3, pea-size 3+), floss once teeth touch, limit sugary foods and drinks (especially between meals), no bottles in bed (except water), regular dental visits (every 6 months), fluoride treatments at dentist, dental sealants on back teeth, lead by example (let them watch you brush), and make it fun (songs, character brushes). Good habits start early! Call (706) 226-2228 for tips!

At what age should my child get braces?

Orthodontic evaluation recommended by age 7 (American Association of Orthodontists). Early evaluation doesn’t always mean early treatment, but lets us monitor jaw growth, identify problems early, and plan optimal timing. Some kids benefit from early Phase 1 treatment (ages 7–10) for crossbites, severe crowding, or jaw growth issues. Most start comprehensive treatment ages 11–14 (all permanent teeth erupted). We’ll recommend best timing for your child. Call (706) 226-2228 for evaluation!

What if my child has a toothache?

Call us IMMEDIATELY! We reserve same-day slots for pediatric emergencies. In meantime: rinse with warm salt water, floss gently (may be food trapped), OTC pain reliever (children’s Tylenol or Motrin—follow dosing), cold compress on cheek. DON’T put aspirin on tooth or gums (burns) or give hard, cold, or hot foods. Bring child in even if pain subsides (could be infection). We’ll examine, take X-rays if needed, provide gentle treatment. Most toothaches easily fixed! Call (706) 226-2228!
